Driades is open source and fully functional without a subscription. Paid plans add the infrastructure around it: private hosting, persistence, curated data, hosted AI and team management. Nothing useful is removed from the free product to make you upgrade.

Open source, and staying that way

The canvas, the sync layer, the loaders and the agent bridge are Driades itself. MCP, Python agents, spatial SQL, every supported format, collaboration and self-hosting need no subscription. Paid plans fund the infrastructure around the open product rather than unlocking the product.

We charge for servers, not permission.

Questions

Is Sapling a trial?

No. Sapling is the real open-source Driades, with no expiry and no feature removed to make you upgrade.

Is MCP paid?

No. The MCP server and the Python Agent API are part of Sapling and stay free on every plan. Connect Claude, ChatGPT, a local model or your own agent without paying us.

What does Canopy add?

Hosting. Private persistent maps, cross-device sync, version history, the curated dataset catalog and a hosted AI assistant.

Can I use my own AI provider?

Yes, on every plan including Sapling. Your key stays in your browser and requests go straight to the provider, so we never see the key or the conversation.

What am I paying for with hosted AI?

We run the inference infrastructure and the provider account, so there is no key to configure and no separate bill. You can always go back to your own key.

Can I self-host instead of subscribing?

Yes. Clone it, run it on a laptop at a workshop with no internet, or put it on your institution's servers. Nothing about that is gated.

Can I use Sapling commercially?

Yes.

Do viewers need a Grove seat?

No. Grove is priced per editor. Viewers are free and unlimited — you should not pay for someone who just needs to open a map.

What happens if I cancel?

Cloud-only services stop according to the retention policy, but you can always export your work and keep using the open-source canvas. Cancelling never locks you out of what you made.
