What you can expect, and what we expect back

The short version

• Your work is yours. We do not claim it, and because rooms are peer to peer we do not even hold it.
• Data layers belong to whoever published them and keep their own licences. We link, we do not relicense.
• It is beta. Things break, and rooms can be lost. Export anything you would miss.
• The software is open source and self-hostable. If you dislike these terms, run your own.

Who you are agreeing with

Driades is a project of h4ck1ng.science, a research collective led by Carlos Vivar Rios. "We" below means that project. Write to [email protected] about anything on this page.

What Driades is, and what state it is in

A collaborative geospatial canvas that runs in a browser. It is in beta and says so on the front page. That is not a disclaimer to skip: features change, interfaces move, and there is no uptime promise. Do not put anything on it that only exists there.

Rooms are peer to peer. What that means for you practically is in the privacy page, and the consequence here is simple: we cannot recover a room you lost, because we never had it. Export matters.

Your account

An account is for one person. Keep the password to yourself, tell us if it gets out, and do not use somebody else's. You can close it whenever you like and we will delete it.

We can suspend an account that is being used to attack the service or other people on it. If we do, we will say why unless saying why would make the problem worse.

Your work stays yours

Everything you draw, write, measure or upload is yours. We claim no ownership and no licence to it beyond what running the service needs, which is close to nothing given that rooms travel between browsers rather than through us.

If you put something in a public room, you have published it to whoever is in that room. Public means public.

Data layers and their licences

This is the part specific to a mapping tool, and the part people get wrong.

The dataset catalogue is a list of links. Every dataset belongs to whoever published it and carries its own licence, which the catalogue records because the provenance is the point. Adding a layer to a canvas does not change that licence, and it does not make the data ours to give you. Attribution, redistribution and commercial use are between you and the publisher, and some of them require credit by name.

If you add data of your own, you are saying you have the right to. If you publish a tree, the same applies to everything in it.

Fair use of a free thing

The free canvas is free because sponsorship pays for it. Do not use it to attack anything, to host material that is illegal where you or we are, to impersonate somebody, or to hammer the servers hard enough to take them out for everyone else. Automated use through the API and the agent bridge is welcome and is what they are for; use them at a rate a person could plausibly be behind.

Money, and the ads

Paid plans are described on the pricing page and are billed through a payment provider. We do not hold your card. Prices can change, and if they do we will say so before a renewal rather than after.

Free public rooms carry a sponsor slot: a name and a link. That is the whole of it. It is not an ad network, there is no tracking in it, and it does not follow you. Paid plans and self-hosted copies have nothing of the sort.

What we do not promise

The service is provided as it is. We do not warrant that it will be available, that it will keep your data, or that it will suit a particular purpose. Given that this is beta software, that is a description rather than legal cover.

To the extent the law here allows it, we are not liable for indirect losses, for work you did not export, or for anything arising from a dataset somebody else published. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited, and in most of Europe that includes death, personal injury and fraud.

The software itself

Driades is open source and self-hostable. The code is governed by its own licence, not by this page: these terms cover the service we run at driades.app. A copy you run yourself is yours to run, and we make no claim over it and give no warranty for it either.

If we change this

We will change the date at the top. If a change affects what you can do or what we may do with your work, we will say so on the updates page rather than quietly editing this one. Carrying on using Driades after that means accepting it; if you would rather not, close the account and take your work with you.

Which law

Spanish law, and the courts of Spain, unless consumer law where you live gives you somewhere better. If you are a consumer in the EU, that protection stays yours whatever this paragraph says.

Written to be read rather than to be impressive. If something here is unclear, that is a fault worth telling us about.
